Business Development & Sales Manager
Location: Emerald Street, Holborn, London
Contract Type: Full Time
Reports to: CEO
ABOUT NOVEL
In little more than three years, Novel has become Europe’s biggest independent audio production company.
We produce premium original podcasts for the likes of the BBC, iHeartRadio, Wondery, Gimlet, Audible, Spotify, Formula One, Google and The Premier League. Among many recent successes, highlights include The Superhero Complex, about real-life wannabe superheroes, and Stolen Hearts, an unlikely love match between a bank robber and a cop, which topped charts worldwide, and Filthy Rituals, a number-one hit on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, which told the unlikely-but-true story of a Hampstead witch doctor-turned-scammer. Our shows are now being optioned for TV and film. We’re based in London, but increasingly our content starts with North America in mind. We’re a lean, hungry startup in an industry that’s expanding in every direction.
We make podcasts that are texturally rich and imaginatively fluid. We specialise in investigative and narrative documentary storytelling, but we’re also interested in comedy, politics, sport and scripted. We make shows that have intellectual bite and emotional heft. We care about awards, but care more about attracting audiences who can’t get enough of what we do. We’re fiercely commercially as well as fiercely creative. We think about our industry and the world differently and we’re looking for people who do the same.
From being a team of five before the pandemic, we now employ over 50 people full-time and have hired top talent from some of the world’s leading media organisations. We’re all about excellence, and we want the very best people to work with us.
ABOUT THE JOB
We built this business on business development. Our passion for finding new growth opportunities is visible in how rapidly we’ve scaled: we went from 5 to 50 employees in just over two years, and have recently secured Series A funding from the highly respected investors VGC Partners.
We’ve done this by relentlessly going after new opportunities, new markets, new formats, and adopting a creative, questing approach. We like asking, “Why can’t we do that? Why can’t that be us?”
The Business Development and Sales Manager will embody this mentality. They’ll be committed to crowbarring open new markets and making sure we close those deals. If, for instance, the VP of a Hollywood studio without prior podcast experience says, “although your slate is very compelling, we’re just not quite ready to dive in at this stage of development,” the Business Development and Sales Manager would make it their mission to change their mind. They’d find the killer comeback, lay the breadcrumb trail, choose the moment to pounce, and make sure the deal gets done. And they’d ensure that once we have our foot in that particular door, it would never be shut on us again.
It’ll be a core part of this job to work with both strategic partners – the leading networks and studios with whom we have relationships and slate deals – and nonstrategic partners such as our financiers and investment partners. You’ll structure and negotiate agreements end-to-end, and find creative ways to generate revenue from products we've already built, own or have bought-in. And you’ll conduct market analyses to identify new ways to broaden Novel's presence. Although our core business at the moment is audio, it’s more accurate to call us a development engine and IP incubator. As we transition from being a podcast company to a fully fledged media brand, film and TV adaptation will become an ever-more important part of the business.
Although this is a brand-new role, our CEO has been taking on most of this responsibility until now, so you’ll be working closely with him to develop a master plan that you’ll shape and implement. In time, you’ll also be managing a Branded Content lead, whose job it will be to develop bespoke commercial projects for high-end clients, but initially you may be looking after these relationships and projects yourself. And you’ll also be working with the wider commercial and revenue teams in both London and LA.
This job comes with vast amounts of creative scope and a seat in the cockpit at a pivotal time. We’re looking after someone to lead the business side of our organisation, and help us achieve our biggest ambitions.
ABOUT YOU
This is a role for someone who’s hungry, driven and has a will to win. You won’t be intimidated by a large annual sales target; you’ll be determined to beat it. But you’ll also be a great communicator and a naturally warm and charming negotiator, someone who can forge and maintain relationships while still getting deals done.
You should have five-plus years of experience in a business development environment, and ideally have strong experience in the Intellectual Property world. You’ll also have a fluent sense of the media and entertainment landscape, and a clear grasp of how creative rights can be secured in a competitive environment. And you’ll be a naturally clear critical thinker, able to solve problems and move nimbly on to the next strategic opportunity.
We’re also looking for someone who is a world-class organiser and systems person: someone who’s on top of and logging everything, and who can juggle 25 different balls while making sure not a single one gets dropped.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Constantly deliver on growth opportunities for the company by maximising existing revenue opportunities with current clients, and creating new opportunities with new clients in new areas.
- Use our existing systems such as Asana and Airtable to control a large slate and keep other people at Novel in touch with projects and deals in development.
- In audio, lead on converting existing development projects into commercial sales – both as individual shows, slate deals and more.
- Lead on winning work-for-hire projects.
- Line manage and mentor our new Branded Content Manager, lead on building out a branded department that wins work and sits alongside the work we do with The Premier League, F1, Google, Financial Times, etc.
- Work closely with our TV & Film team in LA to create new commercial opportunities.
- Lead us into new areas of IP development that we first execute on in audio and other forms.
BENEFITS
- 23 days of holiday per annum, plus Bank Holidays
- + 3 days’ company closure between Christmas and New Year
- Half-day off for your birthday
- Private Health insurance
- Life insurance
- Income Protection Cover
- Pension scheme
- Season ticket loan
- Cycle to work scheme
- Flexible hours (working around our core hours)
- LifeWorks Access Employee Assistance Programme
HOW TO APPLY
To apply for the role, please email jobs@novel.audio with the subject line BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT & SALES MANAGER. Please include a copy of your CV and any other relevant information, as well as a cover note outlining why you’re a great candidate for the role. From being a team of five before the pandemic, we now employ over 50 people full-time and have hired top talent from some of the world’s leading media organisations. We’re all about excellence, and we want the very best people to work with us.
ABOUT THE JOB
We want Novel to be the most visual audio company you’ll ever meet. We already have a bold and singular identity, created by one of the world’s top agencies, HelloMe. But as we stand on the brink of a further expansion, we want to appoint an Art Director with the vision to take what we’ve got and turn it into something truly world-class.
We’ve got a team of brilliant people who are expert at turning sounds and stories into some of the best podcasts out there. As our first ever Art Director, you’ll be the person who translates what they do sonically into stunning visuals: podcast artwork, trailers, short social films, merchandise, more. Day to day, we require all the things a startup of our size and background needs: pitch documents, decks, social media assets and so on. But we need someone who can look far beyond this and take us into many different visual spaces. Our existing branding isn’t set in stone; we’re currently refreshing our brand identity and core purpose, and with that comes an exciting opportunity to find a powerful visual direction for Novel, one that feels both distinctive and fresh.
We’re genuine fans of great design, and the brands we love most are ones that have made their own space: Factory, A24, Warp, PC Music. We love what Dieter Rams did with Braun. Erik Nitsche’s elegant juxtapositions of graphical information. The work of Raf Simons, Rei Kawakubo and Virgil Abloh.
You’ll be working with our Head of Marketing and the CEO. As the hub of this tight team, you’ll be in charge of drilling down into what our identity really is, making it deeper and richer, and give us an unmistakable identity that consumers around the world will recognise and love.
The world of audio and podcasting is a space that doesn’t presently have a leading visual voice. That person could be you.
ABOUT YOU
You’ll most likely have five-plus years of experience as a visual designer with experience in mobile and web, and have proven your ability to think strategically about design and consider user experience from every angle. You’ll be able to show us examples of how you’ve developed and implemented brand guidelines, and tell us about the designers you most love and why. UX and UI experience would be a significant bonus.
You’ll be great at defining and working to deadlines, possess exceptional interpersonal skills and relish the opportunity to work with people who are as creative and passionate as you are. You have experience working with clients or within a team, and can work to a demanding creative brief – but also challenge and refine it to get the very best results.
As well as having a deeply cultured aesthetic sense, you’ll also be the kind of person who enjoys working in low-hierarchy startup environments where priorities shift and work suddenly needs doing right now. You’ll be willing to get under the hood and fix things, not stand back and wait for others to sort it out.
This job would suit an up-and-coming Art Director or senior creative, looking for a role that could define their career. You’re looking to get noticed; so are we. Whatever your current level of seniority, you’ll be someone who relishes the challenge of putting a bold new stamp on the world.
Finally, we’re looking for someone more than a little obsessive – not just about Novel’s visual identity, but about our identity more generally. If a visual asset isn’t up to your standards, you’ll want to jump in and make sure it is. And you’ll make it your mission to keep an eye on everything visual that we do.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work with our Head of Marketing and CEO to ensure brand unity across our titles, while collaborating with producers and show teams to develop their own assets and identities.
- Work closely with our business team on everything from sales materials to social media assets and office signage.
- Oversee and sign off consistent implementation of Novel branding and individual show identities across all touchpoints including website, print materials, a newsletter and so on.
- Create assets for existing properties and future applications.
- Handle regular website design updates in the company’s Sanity platform.
- Develop identities for any new shows and new show properties.
- Manage several overlapping projects and ensure a high level of quality for all deliverables.
- Ensure that all visual projects are delivered on time and on budget.
- Manage a network of freelancers to help with bigger and smaller projects along the way.
BENEFITS
- 23 days of holiday per annum, plus Bank Holidays (pro rata)
- + 3 days’ company closure between Christmas and New Year
- Half-day off for your birthday
- Private Health insurance
- Life insurance
- Income Protection Cover
- Pension scheme
- Season ticket loan
- Cycle to work scheme
- Flexible hours (working around our core hours)
- LifeWorks Access Employee Assistance Programme

From being a team of five before the pandemic, we now employ over 50 people full-time and have hired top talent from some of the world’s leading media organisations. We’re all about excellence, and we want the very best people to work with us.
ABOUT THE JOB
We didn’t start this business with branded content in mind. We set out to make a company that produced sound-rich, intimate, thoughtful, award-winning audio for world-leading networks and clients. But, as time has gone on, we’ve found that brands attracted by the quality of our output have sought us out.
For the Premier League, we made the official Fantasy Football podcast. We recorded an eight-part narrative series about climate change for Google. For the FT, we made Working It, a story-rich series about the new world of work. And we created an ongoing weekly series on Formula 1, recorded on location for Amazon’s Amp app.
Up to now, these clients have come to us. But we want to turn the tables. What would Novel look like if we dedicated some of our focus to branded content? And how could this become a core part of our business?
We’ve about to hire a Business Development and Sales Manager, and this job will sit within their team. The job will involve pitching to the biggest brands in the world, but also honing our offering so it’s as sharp as possible. You’ll both develop a slate of products we can shop around, and figure out how we align with the long-term needs of brands. You’ll have to intuit what they want before they’ve figured that out themselves, and be there with the perfect Novel product for them.
We don’t want to be churning out the same old stuff; the market for identikit corporate gabfests is saturated. Instead, we want to make branded projects that are indistinguishable in quality and thematic depth from shows we’re already known for. Sometimes these projects will be made in partnership with a brand and go out with our name on them. Sometimes it’ll be pure white label – work-for-hire. This is reasonably new territory for us, so part of the job will be to guide our understanding of this space and act as a path-finder for others in the company.
This is a commercial role, of course, but it has a thick streak of creativity running through it. You’ll be generating leads and making contacts, and always searching for new opportunities, but this is also a development job – generating a tonne of fresh ideas, refining existing projects and pitches, figuring out how series will sound and what kind of talent will bring them to life, briefing and working with producers to make shows that stand out from the crowd and achieve a brand’s commercial and creative ambitions.
There’s a lot of scope in this role, as at Novel more generally – your aim will be to craft market-leading audio products and develop co-pros with some of the biggest business names in the world. We have big ambitions. As we scale up, someone with the right attitude could build a role that is uniquely them.
ABOUT YOU
You’ll likely be in the branded sales world already, ideally in audio, probably with five-plus years’ experience. You’ll certainly have major achievements you can point to: big branded contracts you’ve hauled over the line. You’ll certainly be someone with the commercial instinct to be probing for new opportunities restlessly and continually, both new types of business as well as new clients. You’ll have the charm, tact and persuasive skills to bring top-tier clients in, and keep them on board, but you know how to keep existing clients happy too. You won’t be intimidated by tough sales and financial targets; you’ll be excited by them, and determined to beat them.
You’ll be ruthlessly, obsessively organised, able to keep a strategic blueprint in your head and ready to deliver, deliver, deliver. You’ll be a natural problem-solver, instinctively great at liaising between external partners, Novel management and producers making projects, and able to make sure everyone knows what they’re doing and has what they need and want.
While your background doesn’t need to be in audio, you’ll need to be well-versed in the media and broader entertainment industry, know where existing opportunities lie and how to scope out new ones. You’ll have exceptionally strong critical skills and be able to generate ideas exactly to spec, but you’ll also be creative and forward-thinking.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Find, develop, and deliver on significant branded content opportunities in audio.
- Deliver on branded content opportunities we have with clients we already have, and create new opportunities with new clients we don’t.
- Present to new clients and nurture relationships with current ones.
- Work to and deliver on a large annual sales target.
- Use our existing systems such as Asana and Airtable to control a large slate and keep other people at Novel in touch with projects and deals in development.
- Have a relentless energy that embodies our mantra of “fiercely creative, fiercely commercial”.
- Organisational and proactive lead.
- Structure and negotiate agreements.
- Act as end-to-end owner on branded deals.
BENEFITS
- 23 days of holiday per annum, plus Bank Holidays
- + 3 days’ company closure between Christmas and New Year
- Half-day off for your birthday
- Private Health insurance
- Life insurance
- Income Protection Cover
- Pension scheme
- Season ticket loan
- Cycle to work scheme
- Flexible hours (working around our core hours)
- LifeWorks Access Employee Assistance Programme
HOW TO APPLY
To apply for the role, please email jobs@novel.audio with the subject line BRANDED CONTENT MANAGER. Please include a copy of your CV and any other relevant information, as well as a cover note outlining why you’re a great candidate for the role. Please also include where you saw the position advertised.
